Today is a huge day in the fight for conflict minerals, Congress passed the Conflict Minerals Legislation! This will require companies to disclose whether they source conflict minerals from Congo or neighboring countries, and require companies to report on steps taken to exclude conflict sources from their supply chains, backed by independent audits.

Ever wonder what makes a cell phone vibrate? The short answer is a mineral called Tungsten. How about storing up electricity in a mobile device? Answer: a mineral called Tantalum. Tin is used for soldering the tee-tiny circuitry in mobile devices and other electronics. Gold is used for coating wires.

The more important question, however, is where manufacturers are getting these minerals to help feed the world's insatiable need for mobile devices and other consumer electronics, like DVD players, gaming devices, laptops and digital cameras.

A good chunk of what are euphemistically being called "conflict minerals" are coming from the Congo, home to the deadliest war since World War II. The International Rescue Committee estimates that as many 45,000 people are being murdered there each month. More than five million have been killed since 1998.

Meanwhile 20% of the world's supply of Tantalum, for example, comes from the Congo and its profits are lining the pockets to arm the very same militia groups responsible for genocide and the systematic and widespread rape of women and young girls. The Congo is truly hell on earth.

OmniPeace was founded in July of 2005 by social entrepreneur Mary Fanaro. OmniPeace is a humanitarian fashion brand, donating 25% of all net profits to charities promoting peace, human rights, education and ending extreme poverty in Congo, Africa. For those of you who ask me what you can do to make a difference, purchasing an item with OmniPeace is a great route to go. Not only is the receiver getting an amazing product you are helping change lives around the world. I am excited to share with you all an interview with the founder herself Mary Fanaro.

1) Can you tell me a little about the new school? Where is it located? What type of classes are taught?

The school in Gumulira, Malawi broke ground on December 7th and was completed on March 15th. There are officially 1394 students enrolled in the school, 629 of whom are girls. There are officially 9 teachers and 8 grade levels in Gumulira. Prior to this school we also established the OmniPeace/Kitson Primary School in Longhor, Senegal which was completed in January/2009. We love sharing these stories as it shows that the fashion choices our customers make really do make a difference!

Mary Fanaro, flanked by friends Aniston, Crow and Cox above, was right at the finish line.

Watching a Live Eight charity concert inspired her to contribute towards easing poverty in Africa. After mulling over several ideas she decided on a fashion label, proceeds from which would go towards charity initiatives. Fanaro chose the name Omni Peace and began a series of meetings, proposals and fund raising. Two years later she found herself days away from formally launching her line and transforming her dream into reality.

Then she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

Doctors ordered the entrepreneur to begin chemo therapy immediately. Yet, instead of shelving her plans, she struck a bargain: a few more days to complete the launch and she'd begin treatment. They agreed and Fanaro flew off to New York to meet with buyers and boutiques then back to Los Angeles to do the same. What followed next for Fanaro was a simultaneous struggle to keep herself and her vision alive.

She won.

Five years later, the L.A based social entrepreneur is flourishing, and so is Omni Peace. In the time since, Fanaro has transformed it from a little known t-shirt line to a buzzed about brand spotted on fans like Lindsay Lohan and Naomi Campbell. Her pieces are available online and nationwide at specialty boutiques. Along the way Fanaro's good friends, Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox and Sheryl Crow have pitched in to lend their celebrity status and support.

Beyond the glam, Omni Peace is actually making an impact. Since launching the label has raised over half a million dollars to help women and children in Africa with an emphasis on Congo and Senegal. Her story answers perfectly the question she poses to others on her website: does fashion save lives? It seems to have saved hers.

She threw a spectacular bash one weekend in Las Vegas, then woke up that Monday morning and decided there must be something more.

That defining moment became the seed of OmniPeace, a humanitarian fashion brand -- popular among the celeb set -- that donates profits to social causes in Africa.Now, Miami native Mary Fanaro is at the intersection of philanthropy, fashion and pop culture, and her company has donated more than $500,000 to charity and help build a school in a Senegalese village. She is also working on a campaign to stop violence again women and children in the Congo.

Fanaro had worked in the entertainment industry more than half of her life, as an actress, a producer, and for a decade, as a tony event planner.Four years ago, she was the party planner behind the 10th anniversary celebration for the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

The next morning, she gave up her career.

``It was really a change, a shift in my spirituality,'' says Fanaro, 44, who lives in Los Angeles. ``I knew I could throw a party, I knew I had a gift for gathering people and exposing people. I just felt like I needed to expose people to something that matters.''

Inspired by the Live Aid concerts -- which raised money for famine relief in Ethiopia -- Fanaro worked to develop a brand that could raise awareness of and funds for the epic social and economic issues facing Africans.

One of the primary beneficiaries is Millennium Promise Alliance, the organization founded by economist and U.N. advisor Jeffrey Sachs. The group is working to end extreme poverty in Africa by 2025.

Fanaro formed the lifestyle brand as a licensing company and has partnered with more than a dozen brands including Ed Hardy to produce a collection of T-shirts and accessories.

She got some high-wattage help from celeb friends including Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston and Sheryl Crow, and counts Zac Efron, Sienna Miller, Gabrielle Union, Gwen Stefani, Kevin Costner and Common among her fans.

``I am not a designer in the technical sense,'' Fanaro says. ``It's really about co-branding with larger companies to raise awareness for humanitarian campaigns.''We caught up with Fanaro to talk about OmniPeace, a health scare and her Miami Vice days.

Looking through their third quarterly reports, Apple stated that they have sold 5.2 million iPhones, which is, ironically, the same number of people who have died in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It's chilling and if you think about it, it's like every iPhone people buy, one person in the Congo dies. OmniPeace has launched a nation-wide fashion campaign, “Stamp Out Violence Against Women and Girls of the Congo,” to raise awareness and funds as part of an international movement to end the violence against them.

OmniPeace will donate 25% of all proceeds from the OmniPeace Congo line to Eve Ensler (activist and author of The Vagina Monologues) & UNICEF’s "Stop Raping Our Greatest Resource" campaign which highlights these atrocities being committed. This donation will help benefit the creation of the City of Joy, a healing center and safe community for survivors of violence. This will be the first time in retail history that a designer will sell t-shirts that incorporate original artwork from victims of violence.

The line will also feature hang tags that double as postcards addressed to President Barack Obama, imploring him to take action against these wide-scale atrocities and to “Stamp Out Violence Against Woman and Girls of the Congo.” Consumers are encouraged to mail the tags to Obama in order to bring further awareness to these issues and to bring about peace in the Congo.

The OmniPeace brand is favored by A-list celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Beckham, Eva Longoria, Sheryl Crow, Gwen Stefani and Zac Efron.

This line will further contribute to OmniPeace’s over all goal to promote peace, education, human rights and end extreme poverty in Africa by 2025. Each design is named after African villages affiliated with OmniPeace and feature coconut detailing and bone-like motifs. You can see the chic new designs at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Miami on July 17th. The new swimsuits will be available at stores in Spring 2010. We’ll keep you posted! A portion of the proceeds will be going to support OmniPeace’s efforts in Africa.

OUR NEW SCHOOL!

Our new school in Gumulira, Malawi broke ground on December 7th and was completed on March 15th. There are officially 1394 students enrolled in the school, 629 of whom are girls. There are officially 9 teachers and 8 grade levels in Gumulira. We'll keep you posted on more - couldn't wait to share!
